It looks like a furry Leonardo Ninja Turtle sneaker.
And honestly? I’m into it.

What’s up, fam. Today we’re breaking down the latest collaboration between celebrated designer Salehe Bembury and the iconic New Balance Made in USA 992.

Despite the memes, this pair isn’t Ninja Turtle–inspired.
Instead, it pulls directly from nature—specifically Crater Lake in Oregon. Hence, the nickname “Calm be the Crater.”

Price, Pickup & First Thoughts

Retail is an eye-watering $380 AUD.
We’ll decide later if it’s worth it.

I grabbed my pair from Up There Store, so shoutout to the crew for the fast turnaround. Interestingly, their own New Balance 991v2 Made in UK collaboration released at the same price. Because of that, this feels like the new benchmark for Made in USA and Made in UK collaborations.

Sizing Advice

The general consensus for the New Balance 992 is to go half a size down.
However, if you have wide feet like me, stick true to size.

Even better, head to a reputable sneaker store and try them on in person. Fit is everything—especially at this price point.

Packaging That Delivers

As expected from any Salehe Bembury x New Balance release, the box design is top-tier.
It’s thoughtful. It’s creative. And it shows care.

I always respect collaborators who go the extra mile.

Materials & Design Breakdown

The upper is the real star here.

It’s built with super-hairy suede in green, black, blue, and grey. The textures mirror the rugged landscape surrounding Crater Lake. Underneath sits breathable blue mesh, representing the lake’s deep waters.

You’ll also find:

  • A black mesh tongue with green durabuck overlays
  • Reflective hits on the blue lace panels and heel
  • Reflective detailing beneath the neon yellow “N” logo

Another standout detail is the moss green lateral label stamped with Salehe’s signature logo. Inside, the premium textile liner adds to the elevated feel.

Underfoot, there’s a cork-lined insole co-branded with New Balance and Salehe Bembury.

Comfort & Cushioning

Comfort comes from the chunky, time-tested 992 midsole. It combines:

  • ABZORB SBS
  • ENCAP
  • C-CAP technology

Below that sits a durable Ndurance rubber outsole, built for longevity and daily wear.

One downside worth noting: for a sneaker at this price, it only includes one pair of green laces.

The Hate—and the Reality

Early reactions were rough.
Some sneakerheads said Salehe lost his touch.
Others called the colour blocking messy.
Many complained about the price.

But let’s be real—this is exactly who Salehe Bembury is. Bold materials. Strong textures. Polarising design. By now, none of this should be surprising.

Final Verdict

In Australia, only two boutiques stocked this release—Above the Clouds and Up There. As of now, only a few sizes remain.

Personally, I love:

  • The box
  • The unconventional colour blocking
  • The statement-making, polarising look

More importantly, the build quality, construction, and materials justify the premium price. Especially when you compare it to poorly made synthetic sneakers that larger brands sell for similar money.

But above all, I love the supportive, stable ride. It’s not overly squishy. It’s structured. And at my age, that’s exactly what I want.

If you’re thinking about picking these up, a few pairs are still available at retail—just don’t sleep.
