“It’s a weird and surreal feeling walking into a sneaker store and seeing your babies…your creations over the last 33 years still competing with one another in this present day.” — Steven Smith

Once again we have to thank Hype DC and The Weekly Drop for bringing one of our sneaker heroes to Burn City. Regarded and credited by sneakerheads as the father of dad shoes, our hero Steven Smith looks like any other bloke you’d pass by on the street with dope kicks. But beneath this unassuming man is a plethora of amazing sneaker war stories that narrates about how he and his bold designs changed the modern landscape of the sneaker scene we know today.

Or in his own loving term how he disrupted and f@&ked the $h*t up in the shoe industry.

As a 21 year old fresh graduate of industrial design, Steven was never destined to follow the herd. While the rest of his colleagues went on to design devices and machines for factories and hospitals, he landed… actually stumbled upon his first job with New Balance. It was actually not encouraged and was actually frowned upon by his family. Being the trailblazer he is, he pushed on, didn’t listen and followed his dreams. Lucky for us because his tenure with New Balance gave birth to some of our favourite sneaker silhouettes. The 997s, the 574s and the 1500s just some of the few of his timeless creations. Also while at NB, this ‘disruptor’ would somehow convince the execs to move away from their traditional grey shades and experiment with brighter palettes.

From New balance he would go on and do work for companies like Nike and Fila. He would again collaborate and create some more classic designs from these companies, but it was his tenure at Reebok that would eventually birth an iconic sneaker that is so far, far ahead of its time.
Back then, Reebok wanted to create the ultimate in your face sneaker that would further propel them forward against their Nike arch rivals during the great sneaker wars of the 90s. With the go signal to use the latest and greatest Reebok tech at his disposal (hexalite, graphlite) and all the while taking cues and inspirations from a ski boot and a blood pressure pump bladder the Reebok Instapump Fury was born. Initially, the Reebok execs weren’t really too thrilled with the design and the colorway of the bold Furys. They were willing to produce the sneakers but only if was released in grey shades. As a sign of protest, Steven spray painted a sample with grey colors and chucked them to the desk of the marketing department in disgust. Steven would eventually get his way. The iconic citron and red colorway we know and love would eventually release along with a more safe grey colorway.

Guess which colorway sold the most.

On a side note, you know you hit a homerun when your rival across the pond decides to bring out their own version of the pump. Please see the Nike Air Pressure, Nike Air Command Force and the Nike Air Force 180 pump. Classics yes. But they would never reap the same success as the Reebok Pump line. Hard to imagine a world where Reebok actually lorded it over Nike, but yes it did happen kids.

So who is this designer genius/Japanese vintage collector working for right now? Due to a very lengthy non-disclosure agreement with a very prominent media personality associated with the Kardashians we can’t officially tell you. However, there were cryptic tweets left online and the sneaker he was wearing below might give you a hint or two. Till then our lips are totally sealed.

To our future sneaker designers, our man Steven Smith leaves us with this story.

He once asked a fellow sneaker designer if he would pay $150 for his own designed shoe.

The sneaker designer flat out said: “NO!!!”

This pissed Steven off. He reckons why bother designing something you couldn’t even be excited and hyped for?!?

Then he said: “Change the world, challenge conventional and traditional thinking…F@$K Sh*t UP!!! Make me go WOW!!!”

“I can go anywhere in the world and still see my designs.” — Steven Smith

That’s right Marvel fans, it looks like after weeks of negotiations over Peter Parker’s future in the MCU, it looks like that our friendly neighbourhood spider is coming back for one more adventure.

Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures have agreed to make one final movie that will finish the trilogy that begin with Spiderman: Homecoming. According to the reports the main cast from the first 2 movies will be back for the 3rd.

This does not mean this is the last outing for Tom Holland as Peter Parker as Sony plan on continuing his adventures away from the MCU.

With this deal now in place, its been reported that the 3rd Spiderman movie now has a release date of July 16th 2021. This will be the 4th MCU movie set to release in 2021 as Spiderman 3 will join Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love & Thunder. There will also be a set of Disney+ shows set in the MCU coming in 2021 as well made up of Loki, Wandavision, Hawkeye & What If…?.

Following the third Spider-Man film, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker can appear in other Marvel Studios movies or Sony movies, though joint productions between the studios will not continue.

The Kickz Stand’s Top Weekly Hit List #15

“I was in love at first sight!

The simple colorway, amazing leather and major detailing to the swoosh and lining. I’ve always loved Parra, but I can’t justify the prices on their already released styles. I am a sucker for flat sneakers and the dunk is the perfect flat shoe. This colorway is straight up my alley.

I had 3 different mates enter the raffle for me, but to no avail. But while at a friends place, a mate from #azpoo reminded me of the release on the Nike website. I wasn’t expecting to have luck but the sneaker god where watching over me that day. During the release, for 15 minutes the website kept saying the dreaded ‘error, please try again.’ Then it said ‘SOLD OUT.’ But I kept on refreshing the page and eventually managed to snag a pair — cheaper than any of the potential cop methods! I could not believe my luck!!!

I was shooting this in the city, I thought I was done for the day. then I turned into a random alley way and saw this magnificent graffiti. Balancing on a curb, camera gently angled on the floor and with the amazing graffiti work behind me I was able to take this perfect snap!”

The world-famous British virtual band the Gorillaz collaborates again with G-SHOCK. They first collaborated with in 2018 which resulted in a series of special videos that made waves, featuring father of G-SHOCK Kikuo Ibe guesting and interacting with the members of Gorillaz (2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs).

Watch here: https://world.g-shock.com/gorillaz/

G-SHOCK models GW-B5600GZ and GA-2000GZ are designed with the motifs and colours inspired by the Gorillaz album covers. Both will come in special packaging that matches the respective colors of the watches, showcasing two collaboration models that richly evoke the world view of Gorillaz.

The new GW-B5600GZ is the square-shaped GW-B5600 digital watch with Bluetooth® communication and solar-powered radio control. The watch features a black watch face, and the band features a combination of pop blue and pink inspired by the hues from the latest Gorillaz album “NOW NOW.” The message “NOW” floats onto the display whenever it is illuminated with the LED backlight.

And for the new GA-2000GZ is the digital-analog combination watch GA-2000, which employs a new carbon construction with the ability to switch watch bands. The entire watch band features a vivid green camouflage pattern inspired by the cover of Gorillaz’s eponymous first album. A second watch band is included and features a darker-hued camouflage pattern, so that users can coordinate with their clothing.

The official release for both G-SHOCK x Gorillaz collaboration models will be tomorrow the 21st of September. Make sure you check out your local G-SHOCK retailers before stocks all run out.

It’s More Than Just Sneakers Brisbane 2019 Recap

0

The 4th stop on the “It’s More Than Just Sneakers” Lifestyle tour took us north of the border to Brisbane, QLD. This was the 3rd time we have held the event up north in the sunshine state and it never fails to disappoint.

The lineup begins early in Brisbane

Myself personally, having missed last year it was good to make the road trip up to Brisbane from Sydney. Loaded up the van and took the supplies up for the boys to help out at another event. The Brisbane event was shaping up to be a good one this year. A full house of traders and plenty of people coming through the doors once again. The weather was also on point living up to the sunshine coast’s name.

One of the TKS team members that lives in QLD, Paul gave us an insight as to what he thought about the day giving it was in his home state. “Being able to interact with people of all ages having the same conversation 15 different ways was very humbling. We are blessed with the family mentality in this scene and it definitely brought it to Brisbane making the event much more then it ever intended to be. With vendors coming from interstate to support the locals and the surprising vendor of the day was QLD rail who had a very busy stand spreading awareness. The crowd super supportive and the showcase of diversity in this love we have of sneakers.”

Queensland Rail’s new safety campaign, “High Voltage Can Jump” targets risk taking behaviour on the rail network whilst raising awareness of the hidden dangers of the overhead powerlines which carry 25,000 volts – 100 times more powerful than the domestic supply. The campaign highlights that people do not have to come into direct contact with overhead lines to suffer an electric shock or worse, electrocution. The strength of 25,000 volts in the overhead power line system means electricity can jump and arc out, not just destroying soles, but friendships, relationships and families.

Overall this was another successful event. We want to thank everyone that came along and supported us once again. Plenty of prizes were given away through the raffle tickets once again. And just to give you guys some incentive to purchase those extra raffle tickets, just before the main raffle at 2:30pm, a person dropped $20 worth of tickets 5 minutes before the cutoff and walked home with a $200 Footlocker Gift Voucher as well as a full collection of the Star Wars x Bata Heritage collection (which did not release in Australia). Not bad for a $20 investment.

Here is also a quick video recap of the event from Lawrence aka DJ-Lorman

Next up is the final event of the year to be held in our home town of Sydney. For more information on the Sydney event, head over to the facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/2071240756324182/
