30th Anniversary of the Gel-Lyte III

0

30 years ago the GEL-LYTE™ III model broke the mould of traditional sneaker design, heralding individualism and rebelling against constrictive norms. Today ASICS SportStyle celebrates that tradition, creating a new campaign for the iconic silhouette.

The GEL-LYTE™ III model has a history of going against tradition and subverting stereotypes, with this new iteration being no different. In the new campaign we see school children, salary men and elderly citizens, all of whom are expected to wear plain and formal footwear, deviating from social norms and wearing bright and vibrant GEL-LYTE™ III model’s highlighting the sneakers and the stark contrast from the rest of their traditional uniform. The campaign is an overall celebration, engaging both loyal fans as well as introducing the model to a new generation.

The rebellious nature of the GEL-LYTE™ III model stems from the defiant approach of the original designer Shigeyuki Mitsui. Repeatedly told that his designs were too complex and aesthetically challenging, he set out to forge his own path and prove his peers wrong. Mitsui speaks on his unorthodox method within the design process “I confuse the production engineers, at first, they refuse my design method. Finally, they found it a great solution.” His efforts were realised when the distinctive new shape of the GEL-LYTE™ model took form and became a brand-defining silhouette – with its now famous split between the tongue and gel sole. The shoot is part of the Go Against All Odds campaign dedicated to Mitsui’s spirit of disregarding the status quo.

The GEL-LYTE III™ model will be available in four different styles; the GEL-LYTE III™ OG model Green/Yellow will launch first at selected outlets on the 15th of November 2019 with a worldwide release on the 6th of December 2019, the second OG colour in Orange/Black as well as the Black and Light Grey colourways all release worldwide on the 3rd of January 2020.

ASICS x CAPCOM “Mega Man” Collection

0

ASICS has teamed up with Japanese video game company, CAPCOM, to create products featuring their popular action game series “Mega Man”. The collection consists of a sneaker, apparel (3 x T-shirts and 1 Sweatshirt), and a bag.

ASICS x Mega Man Collection

The collaboration sneaker was designed based on the GEL-BND sneaker, a model that has evolved from a triathlon shoe. The GEL-BND sneaker was chosen for this collaboration because of its visual similarity to Mega Man’s feet in the game. The upper material was selected to reproduce the textures of 8- bit graphics from classic video games, while the detail of the shoelace holder was taken from Mega Man’s buster. The sneaker is packaged in a special shoebox inspired by the original art from the game cartridge.

Designs for the collection were created by using 8-bit pixel art taken from the original “Mega Man” game.

The apparel collection, was designed with the aim to express the fusion of sports and gaming. On one of the T-shirts, Mega Man is shown accelerating after getting ASICS shoes as a fictitious game item. The message “All bosses, no damage” (which means completing the game without any mistake) appears in another T-shirt in Japanese letter Katakana to put emphasis on the Japanese element of the collaboration, since both ASICS and Mega Man were born in Japan.

Collection will be released on the 1st of November at ASICS stores, ASICS Online Store, and selected retailers.

“The shot is a bold attempt to capture your attention and lead your sight towards one half of the dynamic duo dubbed as ‘Tech Pack’ between Saucony and Packer Shoes.

Both pairs are made of coloured suede overlays with accents and full-on ripstop nylon as the base done in one of the comfiest silhouettes from Saucony – the GRID 9000.

I personally love the colourway which is a wonderful tone of red, yellow and blue. Seldom will you see this combination, which simply works for me and the pair is really eye-catching!”

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL

0

Google yesterday finally revealed their new phone lineup with the announcement of the Pixel 4 & Pixel 4 XL. Here is a quick overview of the 2 phones.

The new and improved Google Assistant is deeply integrated into the Pixel 4 lineup making it a quicker response time and easier to use. The Assistant on the Pixel 4 will now support continued conversations. This will allow you to ask followup questions without the need to pause to say another word.

Both models are running the same display this year with a 90Hz display. Google calls them Smooth Displays and they can be toggled between 60 & 90Hz in the settings. Displays with higher refresh rates have been growing in popularity lately, so this should be a winner in our eyes.

Google has ditched the rear mounted fingerprint sensor in these models and gone with face unlock system. According to Google, this will be the fastest face unlock system on any phone to date. This is due to Google’s new motion-sensing Soli chip. This chip also has a new feature called Motion Sense that will allow the phone to sense users motions. With this you will be able to skip a song, snooze alarms and silence calls with a wave of your hand.

Google is finally jumping on the dual-camera train. Both the Pixel 4 & Pixel 4 XL will have a rear facing 12MP Dual Pixel sensor & a 16MP telephoto lens for 2x zoom. This will result in wider-range portrait shots. Live HDR+ is a new feature as well. This will allow users to preview HDR+ processing in the camera app before taking the photo. Night Sight on the Pixel 4 range will darken and denoise skies using computational photography which will give you amazing low light shots.

Both sizes will come in 3 colours. Just Black, Clearly White and a limited edition Oh So Orange will be available. Release date is set for 24th October and will start at $1049 (depending on which one and sizing. 64GB and 128GB models will be available)
