Apple March 2019 Announcements

0

Overnight, Apple has announced 5 new services to hit the market this year. While we didn’t see any hardware announcements included in this event, we are still excited to see what they brought to the table.

Apple News Plus was first off the rank. Apple News Plus displays magazines with a new “Live Cover” presentation, lightly animating the covers for an interactive look and feel. Underneath the cover, highlighted stories are listed with blurbs, and the service recommends stories you might like even if they’re from magazines that you don’t typically read. You can also browse through magazines you subscribe to, and new issues are automatically downloaded for offline reading when they are released.

At launch, subscribers can access up to 300 magazines. Other digital and traditional news partners are part of the service as well, including The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. Apple touts privacy in its app, noting that advertisers can’t track what you’re reading so you won’t receive targeted ads based on stories you click on.

Next up was the Apple Card. Now, unfortunately at this stage we will not see this launching in Australia. However, Australia did get an honourable mentioned through the keynote address as one of the leading countries to being using the Apple Pay system. Unlike traditional applications, you can apply directly on the iPhone and, once approved, the card is stored digitally on the Wallet app where you can view your statements, balance, and payment due dates. The app also tags locations and retailers to help you browse through transactions and remember where you may have made that purchase.

Apple Card

Apple Arcade was next up. Unlike cloud gaming services announced by Google last week at GDC, Apple’s version is more like a subscription to games that are available through the App Store instead of traditional titles that you can play on sets like the PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch (unless, of course, the game is also offered on iOS).

The company did not disclose the subscription fee, but it says that it will include access to more than 100 games that are exclusive to iOS. You can also play games across Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and a Mac computer, and games will be available for offline play.

Apple Arcade

Apple TV Channels was next which is around the new Apple TV update. The new Apple TV update will now include a focus on channels like HBO, PBS, CBS, Acorn TV, and Tastemade without punting users to a third-party app. Subscribers can choose which channels they’d like to subscribe to and pay per channel instead of a traditional, large package from cable companies. However, pricing was not shared during the keynote.

Apple TV Channels

And last but not least and probably the biggest thing to come out of the announcement this morning was Apple’s new streaming service called Apple TV Plus. Unfortunately, Apple didn’t announce a lot of details other than the name and that it will be available in the September 2019 with online and offline viewing. It spent the rest of the time introducing a gaggle of directors, actors, and actresses to help unveil Apple TV Plus, including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Spielberg, Jason Momoa, Steve Carell, Alfre Woodard, Sesame Street’s Big Bird, and Kumail Nanjiani.

NBA Conference Standings

0

We are coming into the business end of the NBA season with all teams trying to make their push into the finals series in both the East & West.

If we start out in the West where 6 teams have already been eliminated from playoff contention already leaving the other 9 teams fighting for their spots as to where they will finish. We have seen both the Golden State Warriors & Denver Nuggets already secure their spots in the post season with 7 more teams fighting for the remaining 6 spots. This will be a very tight finish in the west with 4 games separating Houston Rockets through to San Antonio Spurs.

NBA Western Conference standings as of 22nd March 2019

Now we can turn our attention to the Eastern Conference where 4 teams have been eliminated from playoff contention and 4 teams have already secured their spots in the post season now leaving 7 teams fighting for the last 4 spots.

NBA Eastern Conference Standings as of 22nd March 2019

Conversations with Jeff Staple

0

“When I was a kid. Nothing infuriated me more than walking to a room and someone was wearing the same kicks as I am. I would immediately want to go back home. This happens when the most coveted thing becomes the most general thing.” — Jeff Staple

Sound familiar?

It’s not everyday you get to meet one of your sneaker heroes.

And yet here I was, along with a hundred other lucky sneaker heads at Hype DC QV, Melbourne, eagerly awaiting to meet and hear what our hero had to say.

Jeff Staple x The Weekly Drop x Hype DC

The legend. The Rock Star. The Visionary.

The awesome human being that is Jeff Staple.

Owner and founder of Staple Design Studios and Reed Space.

But more importantly to me, designer of the globally recognized “Pigeon” logo and the collaborator of the GOAT Nike SB Dunk Low — the ‘NYC Pigeon.’

Jeff spoke about his humble beginnings in New York City, from personally silk screening his first batch of tees, to his early friendship with another legendary innovator — Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment Design, down to designing/collaborating bespoke pieces for Ferrari and LV.

Jeff Staple x The Weekly Drop x Hype DC

Speaking of New York, he is a huge Jay- Z and Knicks fan. Jay-Z not only for his music but also for his deep business acumen. He is a huge Knicks fan because of Patrick Ewing and his OG 33 Hi ball kicks. But his favorite kicks during those days were the Air Jordan III White Cements. The first Jordan sneakers he was able to buy with his own money growing up.

Jeff also spoke about the current state of street culture and the grey areas happening right now when it comes to brand marketing. By proprietary law, a brand needed the permission and consent of another brand to have their image co-marketed with each other. Jeff, shared the story of how a famous clothing brand in the US was able to display and use images of his Pigeon Dunks, DJ Khaled and other celebrities to market alongside their apparels. Apparently, said clothing brand was able to get away with this through the acquisition of a 3rd party sneaker reselling company. Using the reselling company’s products as a bait to pull in customers.

Let’s be clear though, Jeff is not anti-reseling. In fact he encourages entrepreneurship and brand building. But its has got to be done the right and ethical way.

Lastly, he touched upon the huge role social media is now playing when it comes to branding and marketing. And how its now a major factor in established brands strategies.

In fact, it was a major reason why the ‘Panda Pigeons’ were eventually released.

‘People asked for this sneaker to happen. It’s the people’s champ shoe!’ Jeff exclaimed.

The night was capped off by a meet and greet.

Jeff was more than generous with his time.

He chatted. He signed autographs to the last person.

The talk was humble and honest.

It actually felt like I was just talking to a fellow sneakerhead.

Shoutout to Hype DC and The Weekly Drop for bringing the man behind the pigeon to Burn City.

It’s More Than Just Sneakers Adelaide 2019 Recap

0

First stop of the “It’s More Than Just Sneakers” Australian Lifestyle Tour 2019 was Adelaide, the City of Churches. We’ve held our event in Adelaide for the third time and it keeps growing every year. We are so blessed to the amount of community support we receive when we hold our event in the city of Adelaide.

Here is some feedback from our friends about our event:

Anna Mindis @annabanana – “I thought the event this year was bigger than last year and there was always people walking around checking out all the vendors. The layout of the event was amazing and worked great for both vendors and the public. The music as always is everyone’s delight, venue supplied drinks and food which all together the day was really good.”

Kenny Ng @_mello.k – “There were some good deals on the day and the DJ’s were a nice touch. The bar really helps people to hang around with mates for a few beers.”

Anton Porter @antonporter – “I really enjoyed the day, it’s about getting the Adelaide street wear and sneaker community together. The venue is perfect, drinks and food available, city central easily accessible, what more can you want. Can’t wait until next year.”
