Performance Review: Curry 8 by Under Armour

0

The Curry Brand has officially launched under the banner of Under Armour. And boy, they’re already making a splash (pun intended) pushing forward the boundaries of performance basketball kicks.

We spent a full week test driving the Curry 8 in the ‘Golden Flow’ colorway in indoor and outdoor court environments.

Check out how the Curry 8 stacks up!

FIT: 4/5

Majority of the uppers is made-up of a one-piece breathable engineered knit. It’s further reinforced by a synthetic piece of leather found on both the lateral and medial side of the kicks. Initially the fit felt long and narrow, specially around the toe box. But after a few minutes of wear, the fabric seems to have stretched over and conformed to the shape of our foot. A TPU heel counter, speed laces and a collar foam seems to be the main lockdown component. Knit uppers though, tend to stretch with overtime usage. At this point we’re not quite sure how long they will hold. During the test though, we felt no foot slippages or immediate concerns for ankle rolls. We strongly suggest going true to your size or going half to a full size-up if you have wide feet.

CUSHIONING: 5/5

One of the two shining elements of the Curry 8 is the UA FLOW Cushioning system. Much like the uppers, the sole set-up of the kicks is a single unisole foam. There are no mid or outsoles to be found here. The FLOW foam has been biometrically designed with the athlete’s foot in mind. And despite the new biometric design approach, we found it to be very stable with an immense court feel at the forefoot. The cushioning and bounce back is next level. Very responsive during landings and heel strikes. We felt little to no foot fatigues or joint pains during our two hour run with the Curry 8.

TRACTION: 5/5

The traction is amazing. The bite and grip of the UA FLOW Cushioning is next level. Since the traction runs all the way up to the mid part of the sole, push-offs and hesitation moves are a dream to pull-off. For all types of surfaces, we never once experienced slipping during stop and go situations. The ‘soft’ but durable traction seems to adapt to any kind of court surfaces. The only caveat we can think of since the traction is foam based, is how long they will last outdoors. We did notice some minor heel drags when we tried them on blacktop surfaces. Only time will tell how durable they really are.

LOOKS: 4/5

If you are into that whole minimalistic vibe, then these are definitely the kicks for you! Under Armour has pretty much done away with all the unnecessary aesthetic gimmicks found in most of today’s ball kicks and just gave us an absolute performance sneaker. When we first took them out of the box, we felt like they resembled modern day lifestyle runners. The kicks is also adorned with choc full of details about Steph Curry‘s life and journey to the NBA. But most noticeable is the new SC30 logo. We found it pretty dope, as it incorporates the ‘3’ hand sign when he makes a three-point shot, the number ’30’ and his initials ‘SC.’

OVERALL: 4.5/5

Coming in at $220 for men’s size, out of the box we found the UA CURRY 8 to be extremely light, not just for a basketball kicks but for a sneaker overall period. They come in at 12.1 oz in a men’s size 9. There were times during play we completely forgot we were wearing a sneaker. The breathable uppers efficiently wicks away the sweat and kept our feet cool all throughout the day. The addition of a foot plate is very much welcomed, as it provided more support and energy return with each of our stride. The cushioning and traction are the two main elements here that deserves heaps of praise. It took Under Armour 3 years to develop the FLOW FOAM and yes they delivered and more. We’re very excited where the legacy Curry Brand is headed and how Under Armour is going to further utilize and develop its FLOW FOAM.

Now available in preschool, grade school and Men’s sizing at Foot Locker Australia.

The Kickz Stand’s Hit List #32

“Life is too short buy the damn shoes.”

Specially when you catch the ‘W‘ on the raffles. In my opinion this pair was a cracker release (pun intended) even with all the negativity surrounding it. The make and quality is top-notch. But hey kicks are meant to be worn, so wear them and don’t waste them. This pair easily made my top 10 picks ups of 2020.

Fam 2020 was stressful for most of us but just remember:

“Count your blessings not your problems.”

Just keep it moving onwards and upwards coming into 2021.

Goodvibes and blessings to all of yous TKS fam.”

Jerry Lorenzo Moves to Adidas – End of an Era

0

Nike has yet again lost another one of its great collaborators in Jerry Lorenzo and his brand Fear of God. This has made shock waves in the fashion industry. But Adidas has just announced its new partnership with the style connoisseur and they’re expecting it to be long term.

This new contract with Adidas will provide Lorenzo free reign over the creative and business strategy side of Adidas Basketball globally. He will also bring about his new branding Fear of God Athletics which will be honed in on Atheleisure and basketball lifestyle products.

Lorenzo has had many collaboration with many brands other than the Brand Giant Nike and more word is yet to be spilled regarding their shock split.

But one things for certain, if Jerry Lorenzo can prove himself successful, there are Billions of good things coming his way. Just ask Mr Kanye himself.

Titan 10th Year Anniversary Collaboration with Jordan Brand

0

Titan was founded in 2010, it’s the first and only basketball specialty concept store in the Philippines. To celebrate it’s 10th year anniversary and Michael Jordan‘s global impact on the game, Titan collaborated with Jordan Brand with two landmark silhouettes – the Air Jordan XX3 and the Air Jordan XXXV. Each continues the legacy of an icon and intros Jordan Brand to a new generation seeking a bold aesthetic like never before.

The iconic XX3, along with its innovative use of technology, craftsmanship and materials in its time, perfectly represents what Titan finds most inspiring about the man and the brand: an unmatched ferocity and a sophistication equalled by no other.

The XX3 represents a landmark moment for the Philippines as well. The 2008 drop of the
‘Titanium’ colourway ignited a movement, serving as the catalyst that bridged hoop culture to the mainstream; opening the floodgates that led to what the local sneaker scene is today.

The latest Jordan Brand signature game shoe, the XXXV, represents the ultimate expression of pinnacle basketball performance. Titan is committed to championing Jordan Brand’s innovation agenda, and continues to be an active participant in shaping the future of the game.

Similar to what the XX3 was in 2008 at the start of a movement, the XXXV in 2020 is a symbol of limits being pushed in the boldest, most innovative way possible – a representation of the perfect balance between performance and style.

Jordan Brand and Titan a sanctuary for the game in Manila, both on-court and off. From the Greatest Ever and from the home of the world’s most unique passion for hoops – working together to grow the future of basketball culture.

Jordan Brand and Titan are forever changing the game. Always, For Love of the Game.

Disney Investor Day Wrap Up

0

Here we are heading towards the end of 2020. The year that everyone wants to forget. Unfortunately this year, we all had to take a step back and put life on hold while we got through the global pandemic known as COVID-19. Apart of putting everything on hold this year, meant we didnt get the big blockbuster movies or new TV series that we have reported on that were due to hit the big and small screen.

Now, Disney have finally given us some hope with new release dates, new series, and some fresh trailers for some upcoming goodness we have all been waiting for. Here is a quick recap of what went down in the Disney Investor Day that primarily focused on its streaming service, Disney+

Direct to Consumer

Disney has a plan to expand its direct to consumer business. This is what we experienced with the live-action movie Mulan earlier this year. This is basically putting movies in the threaters and on the streaming service the same day. This will also include 10 Marvel Shows, 10 Star Wars shows & 15 Disney & Pixar original shows & movies over the next few years. The first one of these will be Raya and The Last Dragon which will debut on March 5th 2021

Lucasfilm

The Star Wars universe is quickly expanding. And it appears its going to get even bigger moving forward. The success of The Mandalorian has helped Disney+ get a massive foothold in the streaming space. One of the spinoff series to come from The Mandalorian will be Ahsoka Tano based off Rosario Dawson’s portray of the most famous Torgruta Jedi. This will air sometime in 2022. The 2nd spinoff from The Mandalorian will be Rangers of the New Republic. Along with Ahsoka, these will be coming from Jon Favreau & Dave Filloni who both do The Mandalorian.

Obi Wan will begin production in March 2021 focusing around Ewan McGregor’s character and it has been confirmed that Hayden Christensen will return as Darth Vadar in this series. The series will take place 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and will air on Disney+

The Bad Batch will follow characters on new missions in a rapidly changing galaxy. Here is the teaser trailer

Star Wars Visions will be a Star Wars anthology series, offering a “diverse” approach to Star Wars. Lando Calrissian is also returning for a series. The Acolyte will be a mystery series set in the final days of the High Republic era. The Droid and Willow will also be on Disney+. Warwick Davis will return as Willow. Jon Chu is directing the pilot and will begin shooting next year in Wales.

Marvel

This is the part that excites me the most. Unfortunately this year was meant to be a massive year for Marvel, but COVID-19 threw it all out the window. So lets refresh what was meant to happen this year in the MCU along with whats coming over the next few years!

New WandaVision trailer. The series is set to stream on Disney+ from Jan 15 2021

We finally got the first look at The Falcon & Winter Solider with an official trailer. This will stream from March 13th on Disney+

And the 3rd Marvel series heading to Disney+ is none other then Loki. Here is the first look before it streams in May 2021

Marvel also gave us an update on the Phase 4 slate with a raft of movies and when we will expect them.

* Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings – July 9th 2021
* Captain Marvel 2 – Nov 11th 2022
* Thor: Love & Thunder – May 6th 2022. Filming begins early 2021 here in Australia. Christian Bale has been cast to play Gorr the God Butcher
* Ant Man & The Wasp: Quantumania – Peyton Reed is back to direct the 3rd installment which will introduce Kang The Conqueror played by Jonathan Majors
* Fantastic Four – Thats right, another F4 reboot, this time…done by Marvel and hopefully done the right way. Jon Watts (Spiderman: Homecoming & Spiderman: Far From Home) is set to direct

On top of the movie list, a raft of new series heading to Disney+

* Hawkeye – Jeremy Renner returns in an original series coming to Disney+ (no ETA)
* She-Hulk – Tatiana Maslany will portray Jennifer Walters (She-Hulk) along with Tim Roth reprising Abomination and Mark Ruffalo returning at Bruce Banner in an original series coming to Disney+ (no ETA)
* Moon Knight – Early stages. No casting information available. Original Series coming to Disney+
* Secret Invasion – Samuel L Jackson is back as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull Talos return in an original series coming to Disney+
* Ironheart – Dominique Thorne portrays genuins inventor Riri Williams in an original series coming to Disney+
* Armour Wars – Don Cheadle returns as James Rhodes aka War Machine in an original series coming to Disney+
* The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special – James Gunn is back to write and direct this. We have been told its been filmed in conjunction with Vol. 3 of GOTG coming to Disney+ in 2022
* I Am Groot – A series of shorts centering around Baby Groot coming to Disney+

There is alot to look forward too, plenty of time spent in the movies or in front of the TV watching so much Star Wars and Marvel goodness.

Let us know what you’re looking forward the most
